Back in the golden age of comics we mostly had our Batman, and our Superman and even the Fantastic Four and these were fine. Most of these superheroes were pretty generic, truth be told, and with the exception of Batman, there was not tremendous depth in the actual character of these, well, characters. They were strong and they made us feel safe. When you were a kid, who needed home security when the thought of Superman watching over you was constantly buzzing through your mind? Of course this changed as time went on but few could forget their initial surprise when a superhero like Spider-Man splashed onto the Marvel comics scene way back in 1962.
Meek and seemingly unnoticeable, Peter Parker or “Spider-Man” didn’t exactly ooze all of that manly testosterone that all of the others like Superman and Thor brought to the table. It was a different time and a different kind of superhero was required, one that was more human and something that was relatable. Peter Parker was anti-social, was afraid of women, suffered from severe guilt and had a myriad of other social anxieties that he hid under a mask and a snarky, sarcastic personality. Even with superpowers he still felt insecure and, really, that’s what made him all the more likable because, in some small way, he was real.
